There are two types of printers: inkjet and laser. Whereas inkjet printers use ink, laser printers use toner. Printer toner cartridges, just like ink cartridges, need to be regularly replaced for the printer to operate properly. This is especially important for companies that print large volumes of documents, making laser printers indispensable.
When it comes to output and durability, there’s no contest—laser printers are superior. Designed to withstand the strain of printing thousands upon thousands of pages on a single toner cartridge, laser printers also suffer far less wear and tear than inkjet printers. This makes them ideal for offices where there’s little time to constantly replace ink cartridges which add up in price over time.
Laser printers are specifically designed to print large numbers of black and white images with ultra-fine resolution. A comparison between a document printed by an inkjet printer and one created by a laser printer will quickly reveal the difference... : Images created by laser printers are sharper, crisper, and more professional looking.
Unlike ink, toner is solid. It acts as the fuel that creates the print after being melted by the laser in the printer. Toner consists of small plastic particles that are electrically charged opposite to that of the energy of the printer’s drum. This causes a voltage to spark in the drum. The spreader roller absorbs the energy and the toner particles attach themselves to the roller, turning what was once a hidden picture into a real one—essentially coloring in the image like a secret message. In short, toner allows the laser printer to create a finely detailed picture.
Print quality in a laser printer is determined by the size of the toner particles. Smaller particles allow for more precise, higher-resolution images. In addition, all images created by laser printers are waterproof, as they are not drawn with ink and can’t smear.
